🟢 CE Certification — European Union
What it is: CE marking indicates conformity with EU health, safety, and environmental protection requirements under the Low Voltage Directive 2014/35/EU (for equipment 50-1000V AC or 75-1500V DC).
Applicable Standards
- EN 60898-1: MCB for household and similar applications — ratings 6A-125A, breaking capacity 3kA-25kA
- EN 60947-2: Low voltage switchgear — MCCB and ACB, ratings up to 6300A, breaking capacity up to 150kA
- EN 60898-2: MCB for DC applications
Key Requirements for CE
- Technical Construction File (TCF): Complete technical documentation including design drawings, test reports, risk assessment
- Test reports: From an accredited European lab (or recognized third-party lab)
- Factory production control: ISO 9001 or equivalent quality system
- Declaration of Conformity (DoC): Signed by manufacturer, takes legal responsibility
- CE mark on product: Affixed visibly, legibly, and indelibly
| Test Item | EN 60898 (MCB) | EN 60947-2 (MCCB/ACB) |
|---|---|---|
| Dielectric strength | 2kV for 1 min | 2.5kV for 1 min (ratedUe≤690V) |
| Temperature rise | ΔT ≤ 60K (terminals) | ΔT ≤ 80K (per standard table) |
| Short-circuit test | 10kA (type B), 6kA (type C), 3kA (type D) | 10-150kA depending on rating |
| Endurance (electrical) | 4,000 cycles (In ≤ 16A), 2,000 cycles (In > 16A) | 1,000-6,000 cycles depending on utilization category |
🔵 UL Listing — United States & Canada
What it is: UL (Underwriters Laboratories) listing means the product has been tested by an OSHA-recognized NRTL (National Recognized Testing Laboratory) and found to meet UL 489 safety standards. Required for electrical equipment sold in the US.
UL 489 Requirements
- Product testing: Must be tested by UL or another NRTL (CSA, ETL, TÜV, etc.)
- Factory inspection: UL conducts quarterly unannounced factory inspections
- Follow-up service: Manufacturer must maintain certification and allow ongoing inspections
- UL mark on product: "UL Listed" followed by control number
- File number: Each UL-listed product gets a file number for verification
Testing Requirements (UL 489)
| Test | Requirement |
|---|---|
| Short-Circuit Test | Must withstand rated short-circuit current without safety hazard (no fire, no explosion, no shock) |
| Calibration (Temperature) | Calibrated at 25°C baseline, trip characteristics tested across operating temperature range |
| Dielectric Voltage Withstand | 1,500V AC for 60 seconds without breakdown |
| Endurance Test | 6,000 operations at rated current |
| Salt Spray (for humid environments) | 48-hour salt spray test for products used in corrosive environments |
🔴 CCC Certification — China
What it is: China Compulsory Certification (CCC) is a mandatory product safety certification for specific product categories sold in mainland China, administered by CNCA (Certification and Accreditation Administration of China).
CCC Certification Process
- Application: Submit to authorized certification body (CCIC, CQC, or PCCC)
- Product testing: Testing in China-accredited labs (gb-lab.com listing)
- Factory inspection: Audited by certification body representatives
- Certification decision: Based on test + factory inspection results
- Certificate issuance: CCC certificate valid 5 years, annual surveillance
- Marking: CCC mark must be affixed before product enters Chinese market
Cost: ¥100,000-300,000 (~$15,000-$45,000) per product family
Time: 3-6 months
Which Certification Do You Need?
| Your Market | Required Certification | Can Manufacturer Help? |
|---|---|---|
| Germany, France, Italy, Spain, EU | CE (EN 60947-2) | ✅ Most exporters have CE |
| United States | UL Listed (UL 489) | ⚠️ Fewer manufacturers have UL |
| Canada | CSA or UL Listing | ⚠️ CSA certification required |
| United Kingdom | UKCA (BS 7671) | ✅ Same as CE + extra UKCA marking |
| China (domestic) | CCC (GB 14048) | ✅ Through Chinese importer |
| Australia | RCM / SAI Global | ✅ CE + AS/NZS 60898 accepted |
| Southeast Asia | IEC-based or local mark | ✅ CE accepted in most countries |
